That is a good point for engine durability and makes it more efficient and pleasurable to drive. Engineers tried to keep the simplicity of a cheap 3-cylinder engine, but the modern equipment of the 1.0 TSI requires advanced electronics (sensors, control units and etc). Is a 1.5 TSI better than a 1.0? On the highway this 1.5 TSI really sings.
My 1.0 TSI with 900 miles is now loosening up nicely and I would say that it has the edge on the 1.2 4 cylinder engines for outright performance. However unless sophistication improves with more mileage I would say that the 1.2 engines were slightly more refined and better mannered. I have the old 1.6 NA engine (102hp) and it would do 11.5s in the best conditions and mine has really short gear ratios for 1-2-3. Even with a slightly more potent engine, more torque than mine and slightly lighter car, there's no way it would get to 8,9s.
