On a similar issue, we originally had problems with image quality, when posting circuit diagrams as forum-accepted JPEGs. Found that if the 'original' PDFs were converted to JPG (I did it using Foxit PhantomPDF), image quality remained quite high, and allowing magnification (within reason).
